Rome Sr. Adults Travel to Russia |
This summer, Joel Snider and Keith Reaves traveled to Russia as part of the senior adult ministry of First Baptist Church, Rome. Twenty-four persons made the journey, which included a cruise in Russia, and stops in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Keith Reaves, the trip coordinator and minister of music, explained that
while the tour included the usual tourist attractions, it also featured
opportunities to "get the feel of the real Russia." For example, small
groups from the tour were able to visit in the homes of Russian senior
adults. In one home, they were hosted by a woman in her 70's who told
stories of life in Soviet-era Russia as well as her experiences growing
up in Siberia. A singer, she sang for the group, and then asked them to
sing "America the Beautiful" for her. As they met with other Russians,
they heard stories from the Nazi occupation and other experiences from
daily life in Russian towns.
The tour also featured visits to several churches. In Moscow, they
attended services at Christ Our Savior Church. As a Russian Orthodox
church, their worship included veneration of icons and vocal music (no
instruments). Reaves explained that the group learned later that the
service that day was led by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church
(the Patriarch is their top priest).
While traveling, the group from Rome enjoyed meals that often included
beets and cabbage, and gained a new appreciation for the goodness of
people. Reaves recalled a comment one Russian made, "If regular people,
rather than politicians could get together to discuss the world's
problems, we could work things out."
